Jocund was first used in the 14th century and came from two Latin words, jucundus, which means pleasant, agreeable or delightful, and jocus, which means a joke. You can use it to describe people and things that are cheerful and merry. Jocund is rather formal and is sometimes used in a mildly humorous way to indicate someone who is agreeable. Jucundus is also a given name or surname of several people and of different Christian saints.

It’s worth nothing that jocund is different from jocular because it doesn’t so much mean “funny and humorous,” as “cheerful and spirited.” Someone who is in a jocund mood is light-hearted, but not necessarily comical.

In general, people who are cheerful and funny are quite popular among their peers. Some studies also confirmed the long-standing belief that women like humorous men, while men like women who have an appreciation of humor. But there are different types of humorsatirical, parodic, self-deprecating to name a few — and one type of humor may appeal to you but not to another. So knowing the different types of humor might be able to help you in finding your Mr. or Mrs. Right.
