Many can attest that the corporate world is a cutthroat place; only those with a competitive advantage can thrive—and even teeter at the top of the career ladder. For those who dream big, that competitive advantage can be made more attainable by improving public speaking skills. An efficient communicator is seen as confident, intelligent and as a natural leader, therefore the individual is more likely to be promoted, earn more money and have a better quality of life.

Public speaking is certainly not for the faint of heart. One must cultivate good habits until public speaking becomes second nature. We hope the mini list below can help you prepare for your upcoming presentations and leave your audience with a lasting impression.

  1. Start and end stronger. The beginning and the ending of your presentation are arguably the most important parts of your speech. Craft a powerful opening and a strong closing statement. The former will hook your listeners and generate excitement in the topic; the latter is meant to inspire, motivate and call your audience to action.
  2. Engage your audience. Your audience will appreciate you if you treat them as individuals and not as a group. Speak to one person at a time by maintaining eye contact; before you know it, you’ll be building credibility, rapport and gaining their trust.
  3. Keep the focus on you. Technology and note cards are some of the things that can distract your audience’s attention. Instead, you shouldn’t rely too much on technology and only glance at your notes from time to time.
  4. Be enthusiastic and passionate about your topic. Without energy in your voice, your presentation can go awry and get boring; and who wants to listen to that? It’s easy to fake passion by doing exaggerated movements or raising your voice, however you should always strive to show genuine enthusiasm.
  5. Practice. A good speech doesn’t just happen. It’s the result of years of experience and learning from past mistakes. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t become a good public speaker in a short time. There are many resources that can help you overcome the fear of public speaking, but nothing is more effective than familiarizing yourself with your speech topic.

Many people dread speaking in public, not realizing that it’s their time to shine. Get out of your comfort zone and into the habit of exercising the above-mentioned tips and you’ll be a great communicator in no time.
