Politically speaking, he was way before his time: a staunch supporter of women&#039;s suffrage, anti-slavery from the start, and very actively anti-imperialistic (though that was later on in his life). He chilled with some of the biggest names in his day, and pretty much opened the doors for the vernacular novel in America.

And c&#039;mon, that mustache? Can&#039;t beat it :)</description>
