in Life at CSOFT, Localization Tips

In the Global Resource department at CSOFT, the daily task of a coordinator is to find linguists and to guide them through CSOFT’s translation process. Meet Edvardas Chmieliauskas, one of our global resource coordinators from Lithuania. He came to Beijing five years ago and has a background in linguistic testing. In today’s Simply CSOFT, he offers insight into the day-to-day routine of a CSOFT Linguistic Project coordinator and the difficulties he faces.

What is your current project?

Right now I am working on my biggest project yet with a Chinese telecommunications company in Xi’An. I have to find linguists from specific countries living anywhere in China and fly them to Xi’An for a whole week to do linguistic testing. In fact, today I found an experienced Arabic tester who is flying to Xi’An later this afternoon!

What is the biggest challenge you face in your day-to-day work?

The biggest challenge is to find linguists from small countries who are located in Beijing. Working with clients who often change or cancel deadlines is also challenging because we lose resources each time.

Which language is the most difficult to find linguists in?

Tibetan was very hard. At the beginning, it seemed impossible to find good English speakers from Tibet. I even had to contact a Tibetan hospital in Beijing. But after I found one linguist, I easily found two more. Another language that gave me a lot of headaches was Estonian. Estonia is a small country with only one million people, so finding a good linguist from that country living in Beijing is hard. Luckily, we have several reliable Estonian linguists and we really value their hard work.
