In a blog post about 3D printing, we at Simply CSOFT discussed whether the advancements of this technology signals trouble for the logistics industry. 3D printing translations play a key role in ensuring high quality developments and streamlined market access of new technology. This week, a new report has surfaced suggesting that 3D printing is now making headway in the manufacturing industry. In other news, Guidepoint Systems plans to return the majority of its product manufacturing to the United States, and global technology company Laird has recently opened a new manufacturing plant in Vietnam.

  • 3D Printing makes industrial manufacturing headway

The implications for 3D printing within the manufacturing industry are vast, but for the most part use of the technology has remained experimental. However, a new report from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) suggests additive manufacturing—another name for 3D printing—is ramping up within the big industrial players. The report revealed that 67 percent of manufacturers surveyed are currently implementing 3D printing either by experimenting with the technology or by already using it for prototypes or final products. One in four respondents also said they plan to adopt the technology in some way in the future. (zdnet.com)

  • Guidepoint Systems Brings Manufacturing Back To USA

Guidepoint Systems announced that it has begun an initiative to return the majority of its product manufacturing to the United States at a production facility in Houston, Texas. The shift in manufacturing is expected to help better control the company’s production processes and enable faster responses to market changes. “Several studies are showing a better climate for domestic production, and we feel the reasons for this change will benefit our operations,” said Tom Gafford, co-founder and chief technology officer at Guidepoint. “Keeping our production close to home takes advantage of more competitive labor rates, lower transportation costs and enhanced production control. But the more significant effect is that it allows us to help keep local skilled professionals employed.” (Area Development)

  • Laird launches new manufacturing facility in Vietnam

Global technology company Laird has opened a new manufacturing plant near Hanoi—its first in Vietnam—to better serve manufacturers of smart phones, portable electronics and other devices. Laird’s facility in Bac Ninh is one of more than 50 Laird facilities in Asia, Europe and the United States. Laird has more than 9,000 employees worldwide, and is part of a growing chorus of the world’s leading multinational corporations making foreign direct investments (FDI) in Vietnam. According to government statistic, there were more than 16,300 active FDI projects nationwide by investors from 100 countries as of this April. (ECN Magazine)
