The first round of the I Translate competition has officially come to an end. For this competition, we asked respondents to complete the sentence “I translate because…” The contest was open to linguists all around the world, and creativity was strongly recommended. Our winner was selected based on the amount of social media likes the entry received.
We are excited to announce the winner of the first competition: Carla Alexandra Lopes.
To understand further how Carla is using translation to transform the world, we interviewed her to find out more about her, her experience as a linguist, and the reason why she is so passionate about her profession.
Carla, who has been a professional translator for 10 years, became interested in the art of translation when she was about 16 years old. As she explains it herself, she became “obsessed” with correcting movie subtitles which fueled her desire to become a translator.
According to Carla, one of the best things about being a linguist is the ability to use translation to deliver messages that may transform the world. “The best thing about being a translator is to be able to deliver a message in our own personal way, and feeling responsible for other people’s interpretation of that message. It’s a kind of “power” we have and it feels good because you can use it to change something in the world.”
Once she became a linguist, Carla realized that it changed the way she saw the whole world. “Being a linguist changed a lot in me and in the way I see and process what happens around me, because I’ve realized EVERYTHING in our daily life contains translation, from the cereal box you eat every single morning to the instructions manual you read when you need to tune your TV.”
In addition to our overall winner, we at CSOFT selected several of our favorite responses, which included:
CSOFT’s own Kathy Banach also posted a popular entry shown below:
Thank you to everyone for sharing your passion with us and congratulations once again to Carla and our runners-up. Stay tune for the big announcement about Round 2 of the competition, where you will have a chance to win an Amazon Kindle.
